Reading

We are using the Daily 5 as the basis of our Literacy program. 

General info about Daily 5:

Daily 5 has the following components:
1.  Read to Self
2.  Read with Partner
3.  Listen to Reading
4.  Work on Writing
5.  Word Work

During Daily 5 time, students have time to work on any of the above activities in any order they choose.  While students are independently working, I will be meeting with small groups and/or individuals teaching reading, writing, and spelling skills.  Students just love this time each day!

We are currently working on Chapter Two in Math Connects which is Addition. 

I send homework home after we do each lesson. This ends up to be about 3-4 times a week.  The homework is due the next day.

Writing

We have Writer's Workshop everyday in the morning.  Writer's workshop consists of a mini lesson, time to write, and a sharing time.  It is essential that kids see themselves as writers and get a chance to choose their own topics and write every day. Choice allows students to take ownership of their writing and inspires imagination and originality.

The students have generated a myriad of ideas in their writer's notebooks so far this year.  They have also chosen one of their favorite and best writing pieces to publish.  I will be conferencing with each student about their piece in order to create individual goals for writing.

The students' writer's notebooks need to stay at school, but it would be great for kids to have a writer's notebook at home, too,  in which they can keep their thoughts and ideas.  There is so much in their lives to write about!

Word Work

We are using a program called:

Words Their Way: Word Study for Phonics, Vocabulary, and Spelling Instruction.  

The children are learning specific word patterns in a developmental sequence.  Each week we do specific activities in class with our words and some of these activities are repeated at home for homework.  Please see the link below for a description of the required homework activites.
